🏔️ LxI #006: How To Tell If You're As Self-Aware As You Think You Are

Ask Yourself These Simple Questions

Everyone brags about being in tune with themselves.

But despite being one of the most valuable qualities in the leadership world, most people have no clue how self-aware they actually are.

In fact, while 95% of people believe they're self-aware, only 12% actually are.

So, I took it upon myself to binge countless studies— and see if I could find a repeatable framework I could use to judge self-awareness.

13 hours later, here’s what I learned:

There are 4 tell-tale questions we can use to judge self-awareness.

Needless to say, we all need to learn where we stand.

Let's dig in:

4 Questions for Assessing Your Self-Awareness:

This doesn’t mean the feedback is correct.

But it does mean that how others see you is different than how you see yourself.

Self-Awareness begins with humility.

Simple, but true.

This question also focuses on humility. (Seeing the trend?)

If you often feel annoyed because you disagree with decisions being made on your team, this might be a sign that you lack self-awareness.

In other words, you may not be fully aware of your own biases, assumptions, and limitations that might be influencing your perspective.

Being self-aware means being able to recognize and understand your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how they may affect others around you.

The real reason self-aware leaders are so successful is that they are obsessive about aligning their work with their values.

If you know who you are, it helps you figure out what you should do.

This brings us to…

Self-aware leaders understand their values and work to align them with the work that they do.

By taking an inventory of the types of things you like doing at work, you can better align yourself to a role that feels most natural to you.
